Farm Happenings for August 6, 2019

Posted on July 31st, 2019 by Daybreak Growers Alliance

We hope you're enjoying the best things that summer has to offer! We're enjoying the milder weather, a relief to both the crops and farmers. This week the organic blueberries are being harvested and packed in the fruit shares. We have tomatoes, new potatoes, carrots, cabbage, snap beans and plenty of other things coming in from the fields for the veggie shares. Riverwind Farm in Vassalboro is supplying the pork sausage and bacon for the Local Meat Shares as well as some Extras for purchase, pork chops soon to come. The Artisan Cheese Share this week contains a round of Crooked Face Creamery's Smoked Ricotta and a tub of Wild Mushroom Goat Cheese from Appleton Creamery.

We do our best to fill your share just how you ordered it but there may be times when we have to substitute an item at the last minute and without notice to members. When members sign up for a CSA they are accepting the fluctuations and availability with the Maine growing season and the availability of our partnering farms. Thanks for understanding. – The Daybreak Growers Crew

Update from Belladonna Floral

With the coming of August the flower season is really in high gear here at the farm. We're harvesting bouquets for markets, the CSA and wholesale orders and well as having fun getting creative with our design skills for a month packed with weddings. The support for locally grown flowers is really growing and we're happy to see more and more folks choose to work with farmer florists when they are making plans for their weddings. We love doing this kind of work, big bouquets and installations, and it's always great to get to work as a crew with other vendors to all make it happen for one big day. You can check out more about our flower business and the floral services we offer on our website www.belladonnafloral.com. For those of you who don't know much about us. Belladonna Floral is a partnership between Ashley Savage and Adrienne Lee. We grow our Certified Organic flowers in the fields of New Beat Farm in Knox. We incorporate our flowers into the vegetable crop rotation which provide habitat for beneficial insects and pollinators.

We're got a new arrival to the farm, a little white flower getter that Ashley is super excited about. It will help us shuttle flowers quickly from the fields to the walk in cooler and help minimize excess hauling of buckets. Hope you all are enjoying the flower share this season. For those of you who wan to try it out you can always order a one-time share for a special occasion or a just to treat yourself to some soul food!  Have a great week! -Adrienne & Ashley
