D&V Organics CSA

Week 2

Hopefully everyone is making good use of the produce from our first week!  As the weather warms up and the produce starts rolling in from the fields, I find myself with continued excitement for each new thing that is ready.  It's often hard to find the time to keep up with the work on the farm and eat a whole foods diet (meal prep from scratch), it really does take a serious  commitment, but I find that I feel healthier and more functional each day, I'm hoping you all do too.

The warm weather this weekend is definitely putting a bit of stress on our crops.  Spring is a greens heavy time of year, the time of year when greens are so easy to grow, mainly due to the cooler weather.  Most of the things we plan to harvest this Spring grow best in the 65-75F range.  There is a little bit of concern that things like radicchio, frisée, escarole, lettuce and broccoli won't hold up too well in the warm temps over the course of Saturday and Sunday.  When the temperatures get too warm, these items go into reproductive mode, forming flower stalks and becoming tough and strange looking.  We are hoping that this short blip in temperatures doesn't cause too much widespread irregularities.  Things are always changing, and part of our job on the farm is to keep ahead of the issues we see unfolding and always think of ways to problem solve.

Enjoy,

Derek and Crew
