Farm Happenings for March 4, 2021

The rain has showed up at the farm, which we did need some so I can't complain too much. The picture is some of the plastic we laid last week, too much rain and we will have to throw dirt back on the edges so it stays put! The other part of the picture is me picking a few carrots in the rain to check... read more »

Warm and dry weather has finally showed up and we got the chance to lay some fresh plastic for Spring! We use black plastic this time of year to help warm the soil while temperatures are still cool, it gives a chance to get an early jump on spring varieties like summer squash, cucs, and my favorite TOMATOES!... read more »

It is looking like most of our crops made out okay with the cold. The rain that turned to ice actually insulated the plants and kept them warmer than the 18 degrees we had last week. The rainbow chard in the picture was taken Wednesday when the ice had started to melt. The sun has been out the last few... read more »

We are covering up everything we can in hopes it will help save some of our crops! We are not sure how everything will handle the cold, one hope is that maybe the freezing rain will insulate the plants and keep them from getting as cold as the air temp. Fingers crossed and prayers said! As of now we... read more »

Rain, rain, go AWAY! It has been an ugly last few days on the farm, wet and muddy does not begin to describe it. We are preparing best we can for this super cold front coming, luckily we have not started to plant tomatoes/squash/cucumbers just yet, hoping this is the last of the artic blast. The strawberry... read more »

A few days on the warmer side and these mustard greens started blooming like crazy! The flowers were surrounded by our hardest workers, honey bees! As much as I love the winter and cooler weather, I am ready for some sunny and 75 degree days. We will be busy again this week planting and getting ready... read more »

Second to last round of Winter transplants are going in the ground! It is a wet and muddy mess out on the farm right now, but its not slowing us down with getting plants in the ground! We have some fair temperatures in the forecast so we are trying to get as many young transplants in the ground as we... read more »

January is flying by for me, I am ordering seeds and working on the Spring farm plan this week! It will be here before you know it! We typically start planting our squash, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumber transplants around March 10th, depending on the weather. When the transplants show up from the greenhouse... read more »
