Farm Happenings for June 26, 2018-Beef Share

Posted on June 22nd, 2018 by Coopers CSA Farm

Hi Everyone!

For some of you, this may be your first time experiencing our beef share, so here's a little information about our beef cattle.

  • We buy stocker cattle (1 year olds) and raising until they're around 1200lbs then they are sent off to processing.
  • The breeds we have are Angus, Charolais, and limousin.
  • We graze our cattle on pasture.
    • The meat gets a better 'fat to muscle ratio". 90% pasture fed, 10% grain fed (corn, barley oats).
    • They are rotationally grazed, which means we section off parts of the field for them to graze on, and then we move them. This keeps the field in good shape and controls the cattle diet.
    • To much ingestion of pasture can make the meat taste "gamey". The corn/oats/barley/ give it a good fat content. It would be graded as Grade A Beef.

We have decided to get back into the business of "Cow Calf Farming". This means we breed our owns cows and raise young calves. This will take place this coming winter.
