Week 7 July 24-29 Farm Happenings - The Farm Box

Hi folks

We've got some awesome cauliflower available this week. Red swiss chard has come on strong again, romaine lettuce, new potatoes, and more broccoli. There's a good selection of items to pick from this week.

That's Madison holding the cauliflower in the pic. She's one of the many part time students that help us out in the summer. We start young kids (usually grade 8 or 9) at farmers markets usually working beside Lisa or one of our more senior staff and that's where they get introduced to our farm and many different crops. For these kids its usually their first job, so they are introduced to early mornings, some physical labour, fast paced (when the market is busy), and they have to think on their feet - talk to and serve customers, make change, and answer questions. Essentially we teach them how to work. Some come by it naturally, and some it takes a little while. Lisa won't admit it but she really likes working with and mentoring young people. We also take advantage of the federal governments Canada Summer Job program for some funding, having students work on farms is a priority for our area (riding) so we use it and it helps out a little.

Enjoy your week. As always leave out or bring back your boxes and bags as we re use them. We'll take back any plastic quart baskets too.

Thanks

Steve
