Posted on June 6th, 2018 by Coopers CSA Farm

We are now in week 3 of 20...This means it is MEAT WEEK!

Hi Everyone!

For some of you, this might be your first time experiencing our pork, so here is some information about our pigs.

  • Our pigs are a mix of 2 Heritage breeds. 25% Large Black and 75% Berkshire
  • Are pigs are raised in open or loose housing on deep straw with outdoor access and on pasture in the summer
  • We grow them out slower than the norm, and give them a large variety of foodstuffs to eat (standard confinement pigs just get corn and soy) Diet for our pigs also includes hay, forages and pasture
  • Their unique diet, with their heritage genetics gives us a much fattier pork..but good fat.. it also makes are pork absolutely delicious.

FUN FACTS ABOUT OUR PIGS

Pigs figure things out and are very tenacious, meaning they work at things. They figure out how to open gates, work on opening up weak spots in the corrals, figure out how to short out electric fence so they can escape. You have to be on top of your management and one step ahead of them or they will make your life miserable.

Our pigs love to be outside. It can be -20C and 2 feet of snow and they will be out during the day milling around.

WINTER 2017/18 Members: If you have anything of ours (red freezer bags, boxes, or extra egg cartons) can you have them out so we can grab them on the delivery routes..thanks!
