Farm Happenings for October 13, 2021

Posted on October 7th, 2021 by Mike Finger

Hi, Friends:

There was a slight buzz among the farmers at the Saturday Farmers' Market that a frost might land in the near future.  Hard to say if this was gossip based on scientific prognostication of certified meteorologists or just the collective hunch of a bunch of vegetable farmers. Either way, it sets the tone for this time of year: death, decay, dark beer, and stews.

We've loaded around 30 items into the Harvie share creation machine for this week, so you should have a number of swap options should you wish to customize your share.  We are offering our 6 winter squash varieties as separate items, so you can have more control of which ones you receive.  However, you will need to customize your harvest in Harvie if you want to choose among all the squash varieties we are offering.

This Week's Photo:  A washed pile of freshly dug Celeriac.  A distant cousin of Celery, Celeriac (or Celery Root as it's also known), is a knobby root of dense, white flesh of a delicate but clear celery flavor.  Anywhere Celery is used as a cooked ingredient, Celeriac can be substituted for it.  It can be used raw in a number of salads or cooked in a variety of ways.  We love it boiled and mashed in combination with potatoes and parsnips.  It's also a nice addition to potato hash browns and makes a distinctively flavored "fry."

Extras This Week

* Goat Cheese (Chevre) Lost Peacock Creamery Olympia

* Pink Fingerling Potatoes, First Cut Farms, Mt. Vernon
