Farm Happenings for October 6, 2021

Posted on September 30th, 2021 by Mike Finger

Please Note: The customization deadline for the 6 October harvest is 11:30 p.m. MONDAY evening.

Dear Members:

One by one our summer favorites are yielding to the imperatives of fall ~ darkness, chilled soil, and perpetual dampness.  The  zucchini and cucumbers have slumped into piles of soggy brown, the Basil is yellow green w/ black spotches, while the peppers and tomatoes, still mostly green w/ an increasing jaundiced complexion, nonetheless hold solid if ever so slowly ripening fruit. The heavy rains of recent days have soaked the ground to a level not seen since April and seem to have invigorated the cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, and other fall crops.  Most noticeable, though, is the lighter mood among the farmers as the realization sets in that we are in the last third of the harvest marathon, and that mother nature who once left the lights on for 16 hours a day is now lowering the dimmer switch, forcing us to finish our days labors in many fewer hours. Frost could hit any day now, though if recent history is any guide, maybe not...

Harvest Notes:  Winter Squash.  This week many of you will receive the first winter squash of the late season. We are making available two varieties of Delicata ~ standard Delicata and Jester, a football shaped cross of Acorn and Delicata.  Both are good for eating now, but will sweeten considerably if left inside in a dry place for 5 - 10 days. If you just can't wait, go ahead and bake your squash up now; you won't be disappointed.  But to the patient will go an even greater treat... Winter Squash will be available for the remainder of our harvest season.

Pickup Times:  Just a reminder that at most of our pickup locations you can pick up your box on Thursdays at least until late afternoon.  The only exception to this is our pickup at the Home Skillet where the kitchen staff has the discretion to utilize any boxes remaining Thursday morning.

Thank You and we hop you enjoy this week's harvest.

Mike, Kim, and Crew
