Farm Happenings for August 11, 2021

Posted on August 8th, 2021 by Mike Finger

Greetings:

An old bit of farmer wisdom states that a half inch of rainfall is equal to a full inch of irrigation (that is, water the farmer pumps onto their fields from a well or pond) ~ and it's true.  The garden today is glowing with the sweet and mysterious kiss of natural moisture, with virtually every crop standing taller and more luminous.  With another blast of heat due later this week (highs to 97 predicted for our area), we hope this prophylactic dose of moisture will help the crops through another toasty episode.

We begin the Pole bean harvest for real this week with both green snap and romano beans coming on in bucket loads. We'll give those of you receiving beans some of both and you can compare their texture and flavor. Romano Beans are our favorite bean, meaty, tender, and flavorful. We'll do our best to pick them young and on the small size, though 90+ degree days aren't exactly going to slow them down.

Please Note: The customization period (the time during which you can add or delete items from your box ) for this week's box is open until Noon Monday.

Today's Photo: Arden hoes her way into the shade, keeping a young sowing of spinach and pole beans free from the mischief of weeds (for awhile, anyway).
