Farm Happenings for July 7, 2021

Posted on July 4th, 2021 by Mike Finger

We are still reeling a bit from last week's heat storm which torched this little farm with 104 and 106 degree highs on Monday and Tuesday respectively.  We irrigated everything we could during the worst of the heat, including the greenhouse tomatoes and peppers using overhead sprinklers and timers to keep them consistently damp and, we hoped, cooler than the ambient temperature.  In the days following the heat assault, some early casualties have become apparent, most disappointingly the peas which just seemed to shrivel and most of our oldest plantings of lettuce and spinach.  We think the tomatoes and peppers survived without serious damage (blossoms/young fruit will abort in both these crops if exposed to temperatures above 90 - 95 degrees).  The Basil, zucchini, and winter squash seem unperturbed, while the broccoli seems to be maturing with somewhat smaller heads than we'd expected, but otherwise seem fine.  As more days and weeks go by we may become aware of more heat induced damage to our crops, but for the moment we feel as though we dodged a bullet.  Now we dive into the transition from spring to summer crops, hustling to prep an acre or so of ground for crops we'll plant in the next month and harvest for you in September and beyond.
