Dodging the rain and enduring the heat

Posted on July 4th, 2020 by Daniel Zimmerli

We're counting our lucky stars this week as we dodged devastating rains that the Madelia, Mankato, and Saint Peter area had early this pass week. Rainfall reports from those areas indicated anywhere from 4-7 inches in a morning. We ended up with one inch of rain, a perfect amount to go into this heatwave.

The heat has been tough on us humans but good for the majority of our plants, especially the vine crops and sweet corn. We try to stay cool by taking frequent breaks (one ten minute break for every half hour worked) and drinking lots of water. Each of us will drink close to a gallon of water in just an afternoon. We've also adjusted our work schedule to work mostly in the morning. We're looking forward to cooler temperatures!

The farm looks amazing! The weeds are mostly at bay. Our crops look excellent for the most part. It's an exciting time of year as the all the work we put into the farm in the spring and early summer will bear its fruit.
