Farm Happenings for November 13, 2021

Posted on November 11th, 2021 by Janet Aardema

THANK YOU to everyone who renewed their Farm Share membership for 2022! We appreciate you and your trust in us as farmers. Leeks, garlic, onions, and flowers are already in the ground growing for you.

We've now had our first freeze of the season - it was 29 degrees here last Friday morning. Interestingly, this year we didn't have a frost before this freeze. (A frost is when the temp drops to just above freezing but the conditions are right for a frost to form on surfaces.) We can't remember that happening before. This is what your Salad Mix looks like after a freeze! (It recovered. It can do that for a little while - but not indefinitely - after experiencing 29 degrees.)

Accordingly, more and more of our harvest is coming from inside our hoophouses - see photo above and below. (Header photo is courtesy of emi-arts.com, the mother of one of our staff who took great shots while she visited from California!)

REMINDER: Next week is the final week of our 2022 Farm Share. We'll harvest hard for these last two weeks, then scale back a bit for the week of Thanksgiving, then harvest what we can for the first two weeks in December, and then we'll take a break from harvest during the darkest part of winter.

If you're following the progress of COP 26 in Glasgow you may have heard the news coverage that mentioned the importance of even small grassroots efforts in helping mitigate the climate crisis that we humans have created with our modern lifestyles. Our oldest child, Sylvie, has just launched an education and engagement project about the climate crisis and carbon sequestration for which she has earned a finalist standing in an international competition. See our Instagram post here.) Don't really understand carbon sequestration? No problem! That's what she wants to teach you! Her first Intro to Carbon Capture and her Food Forest class is Saturday November 13 at 10:30. Register here on her burgeoning website

Vegetable Storage Reminder: All GREENS and ROOTS need to be refrigerated in an AIR TIGHT bag or container to prevent going limp/wilty.

The delicious fermented vegetables listed here are also from Katherine at Gathered Threads. We've been making our own fermented/cultured vegetables for years, and hers are the most delicious we've ever tasted! Give them a try. Your taste buds and your gut flora will thank you. This month's options include:

Beet Kraut
Mustard and Mustard
Beet & Onion Pickle
Classic Cucumber Pickle
Spicy Dill Pickle
Peach Salsa
Regular Salsa
Habanero Salsa
Chipotle Salsa
Summer Garden Salsa
Curtido
Curry Kraut

And - There are EGGS available this week.

Blessings on your meals ~

Janet, Dan and the whole Broadfork Crew (Julie, Karen, Rachel, Maya, Parker, Ramsi, Anna, Rowen, and the farm kids)
