Farm Happenings for August 5, 2020

Posted on August 3rd, 2020 by Janet Aardema

What a difference a week makes! A week ago we were begging for rain. Now it has rained significantly each of the past four days and we are preparing for up to 6 inches of destructive rain tomorrow. We are harvesting all of your vegetables today as tomorrow will be a day we need to hunker down and work only in the safety of our barn. We'll wash and sort and pack your vegetables while hoping Isaias is gentle on us all.

Trying to set aside the stress of the potential of Isaias, it was a refreshing delight to have rains fall upon our plants! Too much rain stresses them in the other direction, but the Thursday rain took the edge off and the Friday through Saturday rains gave the plants a nice drink. We'll see what the next few days bring! Over the past two winters we have installed much needed underground drainage systems in a few places around the farm. Tomorrow may be the first real test of how well that work directs extra precipitation away from our plants.

Enjoy your options this week! Eating what this soil and sun and work provide us is so delicious!

Blessings on your meals, and keep masking up and washing your hands ~

Janet, Dan, & the whole Broadfork crew (Julie, Caity, Karen, Ray, Diana, Rachel, Mare, and the kids: Sylvie, Joren, Elletta, and Beckett)
