Farm Happenings for October 13, 2023

Posted on October 11th, 2023 by Adam Blaney

GREETINGS FROM FROSTY BLANEY FAMILY FARM!

As you can see in the picture, we 30º in the fields last night. Thankfully, we have enough row cover to tuck everything in nice and tight to keep them safe. Even with the cover, we still do a fair amount of hoping and praying that it all works :) It seems that we've made it just fine this time, with exception of the basil, thankfully!

Things are progressing nicely, however. We officially harvested ALL the winter squash from the fields and put them in storage. Butternut squash will make its first appearance today (Hooray fall!). We also began the harvest of the amazing winter radishes, and they are BEAUTIFUL!!! We have watermelon radishes (white on the outside, gorgeous pink on the inside), purple radishes (unspeakably bright purple inside) and black spanish radishes (black skin and as bright white as you can imagine on the inside). There will be plenty of them available for everyone this week.

As is typical with farming, with every success there is a something that falls flat. This year's edition unfortunately features the fall brassica crop. Brassicas are that family of crops that includes kale, choy, kohlrabi, cabbages, broccoli, etc. Sadly, we basically lost an entire season's worth of brassica crops. We were a little late getting them seeded, but enough to get them out for you. But..... the harlequin beetles thought differently. So... sadly, we will continue to have some kale, and we have some pac choy and mustard greens planted (that will hopefully be ready by the end of CSA), but that is about it on the brassicas for the year. We are very sorry for that.

But.... Salad is coming right along and will be back next week. Arugula and Asian greens salad are strong and beautiful, and as we said, radihses and winter squash are here!

Thanks again for supporting us, and for your patience as we learn what it means to work in conjunction with mother nature.

Blessings for a great week!
