Farm Happenings for June 23, 2023

Posted on June 20th, 2023 by Adam Blaney

Greetings from Missouri! Yes you heard that right. I am currently at a week long church camp in Missouri, with ALL the kids, and with not great cell service… which is why you aren’t getting a fancy looking email today. :)

Because I am here and not at the farm, that means Tabby and Justin and new apprentice Aubrey are on their own this week. Anyone up for volunteering on Thursday to help get ready for CSA? If you’re interested, please text Tabby at (304)520-9699 (work of all kinds and skill levels available). She would be most grateful to have some extra hands.

EVERYONE should have Cherry tomatoes available to them this week, though we are patently waiting on heirloom tomatoes to become plentiful enough to start offering them. Fear not, though… Pretty soon, you’ll be tired of me trying to force you to you take more tomatoes!? Most should be able to take some carrots home this week, as well. Rejoice!

It is strange, but we are already beginning to think about fall! The life of the farmer is always to be thinking about what is coming next. If you aren’t thinking months ahead, there will be no food come September and October.  Before I left for MO, I seeded tons more carrots and beets (the first beet crop went to pot ☹️) and also plowed up the new winter squash field (See the image above). Summer CSA folks won’t see any of the squash, as it isn’t ready until October, but we’ll have plenty if you sign up for fall CSA! ?

I feel bummed for Tabby holding down the fort and not getting to come along, and she was bummed too. Feel free to give her some encouragement and “thank you’s” on Friday (or some help on Thursday, if your so inclined). I hope your week has been great, and you are as thankful for the rain as we are! See you next week!
