Farm Happenings Week 16, 2021

I'm a Pepper...  Jimmy Nardello! Who is this guy?  One of the sweetest peppers named after an Italian gardener's sweet garden-loving boy.  This heirloom sweet pepper quickly becomes a favorite (though I know it looks suspiciously like a spicy pepper).  A great snacking pepper that can be packed whole into a lunchbox.  You can easily tear the flesh away from the seed pocket.  Also known as a "frying pepper" because of its thin skin.   A favorite with kiddos too.  Also available in shares this week:  sweet multi-colored mini-bells, large Red and Orange Bell peppers, and Red and Yellow Carmens (the large long ones that have thick walls like Bell peppers).  The Bells and Carmens are grown in our hoop house and were planted back in April.  They take an incredible amount of care and they do so much better growing in the hoop house rather than outside in our fields.  Peppers don't love cool nights so in our climate, they really benefit from the added night protection and warmth of the hoop house.  This is a good time for me to mention that we do not use plastic mulch here at Aspen Moon Farm.  A lot of organic peppers are grown on plastic mulch because the plastic really warms up the soil.  That plastic becomes trash at the end of the crop.  It also suppresses the microbial life of the soil as you can imagine.  Part of being a Biodynamic farm is our commitment to a rich and active soil life.  We believe that is why the veggies taste so good and have such high nutrition.  Many say you can actually feel it in your body.  Let us know how it is for you....

Bells and Carmens also freeze well if you'd like to put some away for winter.  I just slice them in half, remove the seeds and freeze raw in a ziplock.  In winter, I pull them out and stuff them while they are still frozen and bake- Yum and super easy!!

Personified Jimmy Nardello sketch above by Aspen Moon Intern, Claire! We do have fun around here!!
