Farm Happenings for July 27, 2021

Posted on July 22nd, 2021 by Aspen Moon Farm

Tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers, oh my! Summertime crops are starting to ripen, and CSA is back in action and will be here for you every week until the end of October!

A note about tomatoes in your share- The Heirloom tomatoes that will be in a few shares this week are harvested a little under-ripe so that they won't squish when packed in your share. They may need to ripen on your counter for 1-3 days.  Heirloom tomatoes should ripen fully before eating for best flavor; they should feel a bit soft to the fingers, like a peach.

We are beginning to harvest new potatoes as well. New potatoes are fresh-dug out of the ground while they are still growing a bit, so they are very tender with thin skins. They should be refrigerated, and are best eaten fresh rather than stored.

And what are those funny-looking red onions? Torpedo onions are an elongated, red, Italian heirloom with a wonderful flavor, sweeter than typical red onions. They are great sautéed, roasted, sliced thin on a sandwich, or in any dish in need of some oniony goodness!

This farm happening is brought to you by Jonathan Krohn, AMF's very own Packhouse Manager, filling in while Erin and Jason take a much-deserved break from this wonderful but oh-so-busy farm organism that they've built with this community to help them. This is my fifth season with AMF and I'm the one in charge of making sure we harvest and have enough of everything, CSA packing, much of the weekly CSA planning, quality control, food safety, keeping our walk-in coolers working well, and also plenty of other less exciting things necessary to keep the farm running!
