Farm Happenings Week 17, 2020

Posted on September 17th, 2020 by Aspen Moon Farm

Thank you Community Food Share for coming to the farm to pick up the produce that we have to donate!  This trusty van comes weekly to pick up unclaimed CSA shares and B grade veggies.  Last week, the 3rd grade class at the Boulder Valley Waldorf School came out onto the farm and helped collect up all of the winter squash that was left after the frost.  Some of these had a little crack or funny shape or a bad spot so they weren't suitable for sale; still good to eat however by cutting out a small portion.  The kids made nice tidy piles of the squash and Saturday Dave from UpRoot Colorado came out to collect it all to donate to local underserved people in need of good fresh vegetables.  UpRoot is a local nonprofit whose goal is to get the surplus food to the people who need it.   Aspen Moon Farm donates thousands of pounds of fresh produce to Community food share and UpRoot every year and even more this year.  Dana at Community Food share reports that the local need for fresh produce is significantly up this year.  She also said that what they get from Aspen Moon is some of the best looking produce they receive and that it goes out the door to patrons almost immediately. They report that fresh produce is the most popular item from families that they serve.  These veggies go directly to families to take home and cook up in their own kitchens.  As CSA members, you all contribute to supporting this great donation stream by supporting the overall operation of the Farm!  If you ever miss a share, now you know that your donation goes straight to community food share.  Our mission is to get the food to the people!  A great thanks to our farm community and our whole community for valueing good local food.
