Farm Happenings Week 6, 2020

Posted on June 19th, 2020 by Aspen Moon Farm

It's time for givin' Peas a chance people!!!  Sugar Snap Peas and English Shelling Peas are proud to be here!  For Snap peas, snap off the top and eat the whole pod for a delicious snack.  Shelling Peas are aptly named because you pop open the pod and eat the peas on the inside; add to salad, pasta, rice, or risotto.  Enjoy these peas now, as they won't last much past the 4th of July.   Fava Beans are on the way; you can enjoy this favored bean whole or shelled (scroll down for more info).  Cabbage is also here, just in time to make your 4th of July coleslaw!  Alongside enjoying all of these June treats, here at the Farm we have just planted out the first round of Fall Cauliflower which was seeded in the greenhouse the end of May.  The first Fall Carrots have just sprouted in the fields as well; yes the big fat sweet Fall carrots many of you know and love.  The Farm is always working in anticipation of the next phase of the season, the next change, the next good thing!

If you haven't had a Fava Bean, you are in for a new love!  These unique beans have been enjoyed across the world for centuries.  If you want to take the time to shell, you can cook them lightly to add to any dish or salad or puree into a hummus (no need to double peel as some recipes suggest because we harvest them young and tender). Otherwise, my personal favorite is to toss the whole pods in olive oil and grill or roast until you see just a bit of char marks; sprinkle with coarse sea salt and then eat edamame style, or you can eat the whole pod!  Yum!
