Fifth Week of the 2020 CSA

Posted on June 19th, 2020 by Holly Whitesides
Greetings from Against the Grain and welcome to the fourth week of the CSA!  Just like past weeks, the customization period begins once this notification lands in your inbox (which should be around noon on Friday) and will end at 11:59pm on Sunday, June 21st.  Just as a reminder, if you'd like to change pick up locations for the share that is currently open for customization, please email Harvie support to request that change.  Always feel free to double check with Holly to make sure the change was made.  It is so important to the farm that members have flexibility in their pick up location.

Once again, we are asking for volunteers for both Monday, June 22nd and/or Wednesday, June 24th from 9am to noon.  You should also see an email in your inbox with more details.  Please respond to that email if you'd like to come out to one of those days.  We realize that this is very short notice, so please feel no obligation to attend.  We will be offering more work days in the future!

With the summer solstice upon us, the farm can feel the season at it's apex, with abundance all around.  The days are long, the weeds are luscious and the tomato plants seem to grow before our very eyes.  It's difficult to look around and not feel gratitude for all the farm produces.  The crew is busy weeding, pruning and transplanting, while the harvest days are really starting to gain momentum.  As a farm, we are still acclimating to packing for a 90 member CSA, and we'd like to extend our heart felt gratitude to all of our CSA members for your patience as we continue to develop our rhythms and systems.  We have stumbled a bit in the last few weeks and we are so grateful for everyone's understanding and compassion!

The farm said good bye to a dear friend and mentor this week.  Hugh Courtney, a life long Biodynamic preparations maker and teacher, passed on his farm in Woolwine Virginia.  Andy attended a workshop hosted by Hugh in 2013 and returned to ATG with the deep understanding that a Biodynamic farming practice was the farm's path.  Both Andy and Holly traveled to Hugh's to study the preparations and have gained so much from him over the years.  His passing is felt deeply on the farm, as well as in the Biodynamic farming community as a whole, but we trust in the knowledge that his work continues through the hands of all of those who he inspired and taught.

Until next week, we wish all of you full tummies and happy hearts.
