Farm Happenings for April 15, 2020

Posted on April 12th, 2020 by Renee Watley

Thank you all for supporting our small farm and market.  Last week was our biggest week for farm boxes since we made the choice to close the farm store and cancel all events due to COVID.  Your weekly orders keep us going and we can't thank you enough.

This week we spent time in the garden covering old rows of carrots, radish and beets.  And cutting down all of the bolted (old) lettuce.  The heat is coming on quickly and the lettuce was getting pretty bitter.  Our chickens enjoyed all of the greens and my kiddos loved feeding them all of our cuttings.

We're transitioning the garden; harvesting the last of the broccoli florets this week, a few kohlrabi, and edible flowers.  A lot of our farm partners are in the same transitional period.  In fact, most will close for summer.  In Florida, the summer is our 'off' season.  The weather becomes too hot and growing becomes fairly difficult.  There are some heat tolerant veggies like okra, eggplant, peppers and corn.  And what's summer without watermelon?  You can expect to see these into late Spring and Summer.

Because we want to continue bringing you fresh and healthful foods throughout the year we'll be introducing certified organic, non-local items.  We are completely transparent with our sourcing.  You'll notice non-local items are labeled as such.

This week we've also added on to our extras so please be sure to CLICK THROUGH.  You are not able to see extras until after you choose your share.  This weeks extras include eggs, butter, honey, jams and preserves, ghee, kimchi, homemade belgian waffles with strawberry syrup, homemade sour cream and onion biscuits and housemade egg salad.

Alright enough fun with food for tonight.  Wishing you all good health and a great week ahead.
