Walkways, cover crops, weeds

Posted on July 27th, 2023 by Shelli and Paul Meulemans

From where I sit today, it often looks like chaos out in the field. We utilize cover crops in between our beds and they often grow to the point that it makes it look like we are growing that more than the other crops. It is somewhat by design. Weeds, cover crop, and mulch work together to largely offset the damage done to get these crops out to you. If we can utilize weeds and cover crop to add carbon back to the soil by feeding microbes and provide nutrients for future crops, we can keep things going without adding much for nutrients in the form of off farm sources. Also, by providing this cover, we get allot of beneficial insects to help care for our crops so that we don’t have to spray much at all. Of course, this all sounds fine and well, but walking through it, disease caused by excessive shading, and increased moisture through plant respiration causes some difficulty, but we try our best to not let it get too crazy. Anyhow, we are thankful for the rain this week and we are glad that no hail fell on us! Hope you’re enjoying produce!

P.S. Please don’t forget to let us know if you’re missing any items, have any questions or concerns, or just want to send us and our small crew a happy message. This week we have certified organic blue crop blueberries from nearby as add-on in pints or ten pound boxes.
