Farm Happenings for June 15, 2022

What sort of farm related drivel can I subject you to today? I’ll start by saying that our planning for the first bit of the season was definitely off target. When we are sitting in front of the fireplace thinking about how soon things will be ready it’s very easy to fall into eternal optimism. With that said, I do think that farmers are an optimistic bunch. If we didn’t think we could do things better, reduce failure, and learn increasingly better ways to grow,  a single hail storm or flooding event would likely make us go get some other job. Oh well! This week you’re getting mushrooms, partially because we are short on product again this week and partially because these are the best mushrooms ever! I wish all mushrooms you can buy were this firm, long lasting, and flavorful.

Overall the crops are looking swell, just behind schedule. Have you all tried our eggs? Unfortunately we probably don’t have enough dozens to go around, but these chickens really do benefit our farm! By feeding them the pastures after the sheep go through, they are able to help break down the sheep manure and further fertilize the ground. I really can’t remember a time that I had a crop failure following chickens! The chickens only get organic feed, supplied plenty of space to forage and moved to new paddock weekly, and I think when you eat them you will taste the difference.
