Winter Plans & Canning Tomatoes

Posted on August 20th, 2021 by Shelli and Paul Meulemans

As farmers we have to plan for next year, for the winter, and for five years out all during the busiest season of the year. Everything that we do during this summer affects what the condition of things will be next summer and into the future. In a year that we’ve had allot of flooding and lost crops, it will be mixed bag going into next summer. The flooded ground has been taken over by weeds which will have a positive affect on soil health, but all those weeds will drop their seeds and become a big nuisance next season.  We could till in the weeds, but this will have a pretty dramatic negative impact on soil health and nutrient retention. Weeds play a role on the farm, but they definitely are a challenge to manage. Many weeds are quite good at scavenging nutrients, reducing compaction, and introducing more carbon into the soil. But, when they are growing with your vegetable plants or in too dense of a stand, that can be a major problem!

In other news- this is the week for canning tomatoes! Savor the flavor all winter. We brought in over 2000 lbs of tomatoes last week. Choose from slicers (mix of red, orange or black) or paste (marsalato and roma).

Thanks for returning your boxes. And please let us know if you ever have missing items or any concerns. Thanks!
