Farm Happenings for December 29, 2018

Posted on December 23rd, 2018 by Jack Manix

During the holiday season there are a lot of sugary treats around! Your winter CSA share of fresh organic vegetables can help balance out those Twix bars in the stockings. This week we'll also be offering frozen ginger and turmeric grown in our greenhouses through the summer. Towards the end of March, fresh tubers are shipped to us from Hawaiian Organic Ginger farm on the big island. We warm them up in a heated room at about 75 degrees for about a month until they start to sprout. Then they're planted in pots for another two months or until the shoots are about 2' tall. By the middle of June the greenhouse soil is nice and warm and Hawaii-like. By the end of September, if the summer has been hot, the ginger and turmeric are ready for harvest.

To use your frozen ginger, simply remove a piece from the freezer, and grate as much as you need. There's no need to thaw it first. In fact, frozen ginger is actually easier to grate than fresh because the outer layer is harder and doesn't adhere to the fibrous ginger as much. You can return the rest to the freezer being careful to wrap it up tight.

Looks like we'll have enough produce for 40 shares of a Deep Winter CSA that would run an additional 4 Saturdays. The cost would be $100 and would be through the farm and not the Harvie system. First come, first served! Let us know.
