Farm Happenings for October 1, 2018

Posted on September 30th, 2018 by Sean Pilger

Finally some sunshine!!! We are looking forward to taking advantage of this dry weather to dig the last two beds of potatoes, hopefully another couple thousand pounds to keep the fall share and the farm stand well stocked through Thanksgiving.  We will also be getting into the sweet potato field this week to dig up those beauties.  This year we have two orange varieties, Covington and Orleans (a new trial for us) as well as the very popular Murasaki (Japanese Sweet Potato) which has gorgeous purple skin and a lovely chestnut-y flavor.

Sweet Potatoes will spend a week or two curing in the greenhouse, which helps improve their storability and develops their sweetness.

The upside of all this rain, which has slowed down or in a few cases wiped out some of our late-season crops, is that the cover crop seed we have planted over about 7 acres of the farm has germinated and is growing very lushly.  Good fall cover crop establishment in the fall bodes well for the condition of those fields for growing in 2019!
