Frost is over and Summer Crops are Trickling In

Posted on June 24th, 2023 by Ashley Thompson

We've hit the beautiful time when spring crops persevere, and summer crops begin.  It always feels like summer a little early on our farm since we grow early tomatoes, but this is when we start seeing more 'regular season' summer crops-- zucchini, cucumbers, and the first green beans.  This week for boxes we have crisp cucumbers again, as we wait for our zucchini plants to recover from their frosty week.  We're also making some heirloom tomatoes available as a specialty item... they won't be built into boxes automatically, but feel free to swap one in if you want (this is because of their high price point this time of year). Take your pick!  Tomato lover?  Extend your season and enjoy a juicy, early heirloom!  Willing to wait? Fill your box with regular season items, it's up to you!

We've also got some great herbs this week:  The last of our garlic chives, before they begin to flower and we leave them for the bees.  Dill- the best salad dressing ingredient in my opinion, and hello tzatziki box!.  And beautiful green onions.

Peas are back this week, we may have some more the following week but it's hard to know with the heat coming, eat them now while you can!  They may all ripen at once next week.  And we've also made it to the first of our outdoor carrots (which we started incredibly early, and now are glad we did).  They're so good for snacking this week, a little on the small side and perfectly crisp.

Happy summer, we hop you're making some good food,

Ashley,  Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
