Savoring Summer Flavors

Posted on September 3rd, 2022 by Ashley Thompson

This is my favorite food time of the season, when summer meets fall.  This week we're harvesting the first of our fall crops-- including salad turnips which are available for boxes this week.  We've also got plenty of summer food still, which we're sending your way in force before it's gone!  On the farm we use this time to transition our summer greenhouse crops into winter crops, and slowly, over the next month nearly all of our greenhouse space will be planted in greens for the late fall and winter.  This transition time is important, but can be hard to make happen because there's so much food coming off the farm right now!  Cauliflower will soon be prolific, along with fennel, cabbage and spinach.

We've also got the first green tomatoes, which are coming just in time to fry some up in this cooler weather.  We only harvest tomatoes green when they won't have a chance to ripen, and we removed our first planting of tomatoes the other day in order to make way for winter Kale!

Don't forget to make your pesto!  We've got more double up bunches of Basil this week- 2 for $5!

We want to thank all of you who made it out for a lovely dip night gathering this past Friday, and we're sorry to have missed those of you who couldn't come-- we hope to see you around!  It was a whirlwind for us, but I'm so glad we made it happen and appreciative of everyone for coming out on an unseasonably hot day.  We love knowing the faces that are eating the food we grow, it connects all the dots for us.  You're the best, we're so glad to have you in our food community!

We wish you all the best,

Ashley, Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
