Frost in July, of course!

Posted on July 24th, 2021 by Ashley Thompson

Believe it or not, in the midst of the everlasting hot summer, we had a frost this past week on the farm.  How does this happen, you may ask.  It's not that uncommon to get a light frost midsummer here, it's happened before.  According to the farmer's almanac, we actually have now frost free days here (aka, days safe from frost).  It did feel strange in the midst of so many warm nights, though.  Most of our frost sensitive crops didn't even notice it, but our butternuts that have been struggling all along since getting hit with early season frosts certainly got singed.  Although not ideal, most will bounce right back and should still produce fruit.

This week we've got the first Shishito peppers for you (YES!) and our first german butterball new potatoes.  We've even got some nice potato-friendly herbs for you, as we added a bed of mix perennial herbs just this spring, and this will be their first harvest!  (Not to mention more fennel, GREAT with potatoes). We've got lots of variety available this time of year, so it's a great time to customize your box.  We can't offer everything every week, because that makes packing near impossible, but we're certainly mixing it up every week and offering as much choice each week as we're able!

We hope you enjoy some fresh and bright meals this week,

Ashley, Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
