Last Box- What now!?

Posted on October 19th, 2020 by Ashley Thompson

This coming Thursday marks the last CSA delivery! It's always bittersweet when CSA season ends, we know, but we hope you'll celebrate the end with us by stopping by the farm for some fresh pressed cider from 5-5:45 pm.  Remember to bring your mask (we'll have hand sanitizer and soap and water here).  You can also change your delivery location on the home page of your Harvie account or under deliveries if you don't usually pick your box up on the farm but would like to.

So your CSA subscription is coming to an end- what now?  We're still growing food (albeit a lot less, it's about to get quite chilly to grow food in the high desert), and there are a few ways you can get it.

First and foremost, we hope you'll attend Central Oregon Fill Your Pantry Market on November 14th from 11-3.  It's outside in the Deschutes County Fairgrounds parking lot this year.  We'll be there among many other local farmers and vendors selling bulk crops to get you through the fall and winter.  A lot of this is in bulk quantity bags, but many storage crops keep quite well in a cool closet or attached garage.  We recommend you stock up! Items are also sold at bulk prices, offering you a better deal. We'll also have lots of fresh greens and herbs available.  More info as well as preorder (available Oct 25th) can be found here.

In addition, we deliver twice weekly to Central Oregon Locavore in Bend, which is a great place to get the local-est food possible.  We hope to keep delivering food to Locavore into early December.  We also sell some of our veggies to Schoolhouse Produce in Redmond, if you're located in Terrebonne or Redmond, go check them out!

Finally, we will still have eggs available self-serve in our walk-in cooler at the farm.  If you've picked up your share on farm before, feel free to come by anytime before 7pm, park by the mailbox, walk in and grab eggs.  There's a bag for payment and change next to the eggs.  If you've never picked up on farm, shoot us an email and we'll meet up with you the first time and show you the ropes.

Also keep an eye out, if we have enough quantity and diversity of produce, we may offer some on-demand shares for farm pickup in the coming weeks.

Regarding Farm Share Waxed Boxes, you may either unpack your share into another bag, take only the bag liner, or return your last to your pickup location before Thursday, 10/29. I will be making wholesale deliveries as usual the following Thursday, the 29th, and will pick up all returned boxes and other items then to be stored for next year!

We've got lots of great fall food for you this week.  If you haven't tried Salad Turnips yet, I'd recommend doing so now.  They're so mild and delicious this time of year with a great crunch like a water chestnut and mild mustard flavor.  We're offering some extra flexibility for this last box, feel free to swap if you like!  For cooking greens- we've got spinach and red russian kale, we've got arugula, mesclun and baby lettuce mix available, many cozy fall crops, and some fun extra items available to swap or add- green tomatoes (fried green tomatoes is a fall tradition for us, and they also make a great salsa) and baby fennel.

Thanks to each of you for a great season.

Your Farmers,

Ashley and Caleb
