Late May farm update and pre-season share #3

Posted on May 24th, 2020 by Dana Jokela

Last week was a busy one (no surprise there). Once the soil dried out after our nearly 5" rainfall last weekend, we began a transplanting marathon. The crew got tomatoes, basil, zucchini, melons, and the majority of our pepper crop in the ground - over three acres. There are some pepper beds to finish up this week, plus watermelons, winter squash, and more broccoli and lettuce.

Rain + heat = weeds. So were also busy cultivating broccoli, kale, onions, chard, and other crops that were transplanted earlier in the spring. Getting weeds while they are small is the key to efficient weed management.

Last weekend was also our final plant delivery of online pre-orders. We gathered over 1,500 plants and assembled them into individual orders, then made over 30 home deliveries in the Twin Cities on Saturday. Thanks to Sarah for spearheading this unexpectedly complex process.

Meanwhile, Travis and Paul poured a concrete slab for our new outdoor wash station that will be used for washing root crops, spraying off bunched carrots, beets, radishes, etc., and serving as an all-purpose covered work space to allow our crew to socially distance during post-harvest work.

Veggies for this week's pre-season shares are looking lovely. New plantings of spinach, arugula, and radishes out in the field have sized up and will be harvested this week. A new crop for us - mixed baby kale - is also ready for its first harvest. We also have loads of salad mix this week and a first picking of dill for your spring salads. Four kinds of microgreens to choose from - Mild Mix, Spicy Mix, Arugula, and Pea Shoots.

It's salad season, y'all! I know many are itching for cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes, but they'll come in due time. For now, enjoy multiple types of fresh, crispy greens to keep your salads interesting.
