Fall Season Updates and Soup Season Arrives!

Posted on October 20th, 2023 by Lynne Schultz

Dear CSA Members,

As the brisk cold weather settles in, we can officially bid farewell to soccer cleats and welcome the squeak of basketball shoes. Sadie wrapped up her soccer season over the weekend, and the change in sports is unmistakable both on and off the field.

Back on the farm, we're gradually catching up from fair week. There's still quite a bit to put away and clean up, but we're making steady progress. This past week, all the meat chickens and ducks made their journey to the butcher shop, and we even managed to pick up fresh meat on the way home. With the promise of colder days, it's a great time to transition into the comfort of soup season.

Speaking of soups, what's your favorite? Ours include delicious Squash and hearty Broccoli soup, both of which can be prepared with items from your CSA basket. Would you like to give these soups a try? We've included the recipes for you below:

Squash Soup:

  • Ingredients:
    • 2 lbs squash (butternut, acorn, or your choice)
    • 1 large onion, diced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut milk for a dairy-free option)
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Broccoli Soup:

  • Ingredients:
    • 2 large heads of broccoli, chopped
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
    • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated (optional)
    • Salt and pepper to taste

These soups are not only comforting but also a great way to make the most of the wonderful produce in your CSA shares.

A friendly reminder: for the fall season, there have been some changes to our pick-up times. Schultz Valley Farms pick-up is scheduled for Mondays, and you'll find us at Keller Market, Preston Family Farm, and handling home deliveries on Tuesdays.

We hope you have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the onset of soup season. Feel free to share your favorite soup recipes with us, and we can exchange culinary inspiration throughout the fall.

Warm regards,

The Schultz Family
