Farm Happenings for August 22, 2019

Posted on August 20th, 2019 by Yoram Shanan

Hello Farm Family!

I hope this finds you well.  I'm so happy to tell you that tomato season is finally here!  Ripe juicy heirloom tomatoes and sweet little Sungold cherry tomatoes you can just pop right in your mouth.  I've been chopping them up with cucumbers for salads.  Last week we trellised all the rows of tomatoes and mowed the walkways in preparation of the hours we are sure to spend there picking tomatoes and driving of mosquitoes.  Keeping the plants upright is beneficial for the plants as well.  Not having to exert quite so much energy holding itself upright the plants can put more of their energy into producing big juicy flavorful fruits.  It also helps create better airflow which helps avoid (or at least delay) the onset of tomato diseases such as blight.  It will be another couple weeks yet before we have to do that again, which has freed us up to weed and plant this week if the weather cooperates.  And harvesting your food of course!  Hope you enjoy this weeks harvest : )
