Farm Share - August 4

July is drawing to a close and it has been a hot one!

Here are a few quick updates in case you're curious about what's been going on at the farm lately.

CARROTS are back! We'd normally have an abundant supply by now, but carrots take about 65 days to maturity and shortly after it we seeded them in early May it snowed. The unfavourable Spring weather forced us to re-seed them quite late, and as a result, our first field planting of carrots was behind schedule. But they are here now and we hope to have lots for the latter half of the season and well in to the winter.

All our "hot crops" (eg. tomatoes, eggplants and peppers) are growing well. As long as we keep them irrigated they are loving the current weather conditions. If you're a home gardener you've probably noticed the cucumber beetles causing problems in your garden. They've been wreaking havoc on our cucumber, zucchini, squash and watermelons this season. After a couple of fairly good years without seeing many beetles it seems we were overdue for an infestation. The beetles are voracious and really love hot weather. So while they feast on our cucurbits, all we can do is hope for the best.

NEW THIS WEEK: we are offering pasture-raised eggs from Landman Gardens, in Grand Valley. Eggs are $5.50/dozen

Happy eating!
