Big Box, Little Box

Posted on July 24th, 2020 by Pedro Aponte

You may have wondered why some weeks your CSA shares are packed in big boxes and other weeks in smaller ones. The answer has not much to do with the size share you have purchased but rather with produce volume. We use two different box sizes: 1/2 bushel and 1 1/9 bushel sizes. By default, we aim to only use the small boxes. They occupy less space in our cooler and van and, in general, they are easier to handle. They work well for all of our share sizes at this time of the growing season and so most of you will be seeing the small boxes for the next few weeks.  Some of you, however, will see big boxes. Typically, those of you on our egg share, those of you who love Swiss Chard, or those of you who have been purchasing extra produce. Ultimately, the decision of which box to use we left to whoever is packing the individual shares (either Amanda, myself or one of our crew members).

Incidentally, you may be interested in knowing that those produce boxes are made by a company named Packaging Corp of America at their Harrisonburg, VA, plant. Pretty cool. Unfortunately, we are too small to be able to buy directly from them (I inquired) so the boxes are shipped to a distributor in PA before they come back home.

In other news, we continue to be grateful for the rain we have been getting these past few days. What a blessing.
