Let thy food be thy medicine for March 21, 2020

Posted on March 18th, 2020 by Nate Olive

Here we are in a week of our farm share season when food safety, security, sovereignty, and nutrition have never been so important.  We are proud this week to present a wide range of fresh, nutrient-dense foods that are delicious medicine for our bodies.  Earlier this week we informed you of our strict food safety measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Food safety is always something we take seriously as the Virgin Islands’ only USDA certified organic farm, and we are inspected annually by Quality Certification Services (started by Florida Organic Growers) to prove it.

With the recent events, we have pushed it further to be the best source of fresh locally-grown foods for you. More than ever we feel charged to provide the best food possible for St. Croix. We are planting feverishly for the near and far future.

This week in the farm shares we are pushing several strong plant medicines with the hopes they can help you or someone you love to maintain a strong immune system.  In addition to the anti-viral compounds in turmeric and papaya fruits, this week we have papaya stem bunches for juicing, blending, or just using as natural straws.  When processed into a solution, they produce a powerful immune-boosting and bitter tasting fluid that should be downed like a shot.  For best results process them within 2-3 days and store in the fridge.

Limited shares of moringa powder are being trialed this week, which is packed full of vitamin C and many other incredible immune boosters as well as proteins. This can be blended into drinks, added to soups and marinades, or mixed with water.

Our crop rotations continue this week as the Gaia garden comes to life for the season with a fresh burst of arugula. From the sheep pen garden, we have a sweet set of sugar baby watermelons popping this week. Radishes, turnips, and mustards have surged with the blessed rains. Tamarind and other random fruits are peeking out while the fruit trees are giving floral hints of a killer fruit season. Potent herbs are there for us all.

Thank you for your support and please enjoy this week’s share,

Nate & the Farm Crew
