Sweet sweet corn

Posted on August 3rd, 2021 by Elizabeth Gallo

So remember last week when I warned you all about corn...well here it is! The first flush of sweet corn has arrived. Now don't be upset if it doesn't make it into your box this week because there is more to come, but I wanted to harvest the first bit of it that's ready before the caterpillars claim their stake. Trust me, I thought long and hard about keeping this bit of corn to myself and making a vat of salsa for the beach this weekend, but then I remembered that we run a business and if you keep all of the fun stuff you grow to yourself you're not really going to make any money...

The icebox watermelon we have growing as a companion crop with the corn is trying so hard to be ready at the same time, but it just isn't quite there yet. In a week or two it will be ripening in full force, so get ready for that. Also new to the boxes this week we will have several bunches of genip available from the orchard at Little LaGrange. Chef Brian just approached me about some mango jam he just made so I added that to the available extras that you can add to your box. It's a sweet jam with a little kick (not the spicy kind) and it smells divine.

As I write this newsletter I'm looking at my hands caked in mud from planting scotch bonnet peppers this afternoon. Without irrigating at all today the soil was still soaking wet from the 2.5 inches of rain we received yesterday. Not only is every possession I have soaking wet (perks of living in a house without walls), but our fields are still saturated which makes for a really awesome day of planting. We've been squeezing in a lot of planting this week for crops that will produce at the end of the season and this kind of rain really helps us out with that.

As always, we look forward to seeing everyone this weekend, and if there's something that didn't make it into your box that you are dying to have, make sure you swing by the Farm Tienda on Saturday from 11-3!
