Farm Happenings for May 16, 2020

Posted on May 13th, 2020 by Nate Olive

We are more than pleased to be starting the first week of our Summer Farm Share program! The crops are off to a great start and it is already looking to be a promising season in both the crop fields and the orchards. The deer have been pesty and the dryness has kept us attentive but we are moving through the challenges.

Now is good time to recognize and support those working in uncertain times to provide fresh produce for our community. While the large farm oligarchy is suffering from massive supply-chain breakdowns, we are all doing what we do with an even more inspired passion. I would like to thank the Ridge to Reef farm staff and volunteers, as well as those working at our partner farms. I salute those outside of our Farm Share program for keeping on, there are truly many in the VI working hard to provide. Our main pick-up location has been so committed to make sure you have a good place to pick up your weekly goodies.

Please join the Virgin Islands Farmers Alliance (VIFA) to help us in our mutual cause to increase local food security for the Virgin Islands here.  After you join, you also get a free breadfruit tree seedling:) It's not only for farmers but for anyone wanting to see our local food scene flourish!

This week we are excited to have a large flush of organic pineapples, seasoning peppers, arugula, and immune-boosting turmeric in the inventory. There is a wide variety of other vegetables, herbs, and roots from our USDA certified fields. In addition, we have offerings of a heap of cucumbers from Tropics Hydroponics, collards and kale from Rodgers Farm, and fresh local eggs from Cox Farm.

Thank you for supporting locally grown crops and I hope your kitchens, bellies, and spirits are happy this week.

Cheers to much more on the way,

Nate & the farm crew
