Farm Happenings for April 18, 2020

Posted on April 15th, 2020 by Nate Olive

This weekend marks the official end of our 2020 Winter Farm share program, which is also our first full-length Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) since hurricanes Irma and Maria.

I'd like to give thanks for everyone who has helped out along the road to recovery, especially our hard-working staff, work traders, and cadre of volunteers. Of course it would not be possible without our extended farm family, our pick up host locations, and most of all -you. Here we are in another crazy time and we are working together again to bolster our island’s food security and realizing the importance of what we do.

Starting next week we will continue to offer per-order farm shares through our new Pop-up Farm Stand feature to all of our members, given the continual flow of crops and demand in between the end of this season and our summer season beginning on May 9th,  So, next Wednesday if your product preferences match up to our listed crop inventory, you will get an email saying a box is available and you will have 24 hrs to reserve one.  We suggest to check your account and see if "Farm Stand" is enabled to make sure you get a notice and can buy a share.

We have many more crops that will be making a showing soon, such as salad tomatoes, pineapples, and snap peas among many other organic goodies.  If you aren't already joined for the summer CSA now is your chance.  If your account is set to auto-renew then you don't have to take any action to enjoy the fruits and vegetables of the summer.

Some early fruit arrivals this week include one of my personal favourites, the wax apple (AKA rose apple). Crunchy like a regular apple, it has a high juice content and is incredibly refreshing to bite into on a hot day in the field.  The fruits of this productive tree get better and better throughout a season, moving from its early tarness to a later sweeness with a hint of cinnamon at the end of its fruiting cycle. There is an astringent-tasting harmless seed in the middle to avoid eating. We suggest to take it out and plant it. Soursops and pineapples are also peeking in limited quantities this week.  If you don’t get one this week then we highly advise making use of the farm stand in weeks to come because things are bursting.

We will have extra items available pre-bagged a-la-carte at our new market in front of the Lawaetz Museum at Little LaGrange Farm from 11am-3pm. Misfit Island Munchies will also be selling farm-based tamales (pork or veggie) and a few other items for pick up that you can heat up at home. Soon we will be offering family-sized “Slow Down Dinner” to-go meals so let us know if you are interested now to get on the list
