Farm Happenings for October 7, 2023

Posted on October 2nd, 2023 by Emily Hendrikx

Hey there,

A couple years after we moved here we planted about a dozen fruit trees.  Some of them made it, others didn't.  But the ones that did survive are just starting to become productive.  We got our first plums this summer (just 3), and our handful of apple trees were loaded.  Looking around the community, it seems like many people were in the same boat.  With the help of some of our awesome Share members we made some cider.  We heard about a farm that does custom pressing through you guys, got a bunch of extra apples through you guys and Amma Canada (a local Charity that happens to have an organic apple orchard, also swimming in apples) and made the trip last week to get some apples pressed.

It was a pretty neat place.  First, the apples are washed and rinsed, then mashed and pressed, and then finally bagged.  Because the juice is unpasteurized, it is best to be consumed within 5days after thawing.  We don't drink much cider at our place until winter.  A few of our Christmas traditions are hot spiced cider after cutting the Christmas tree and in the garage as we host holiday wreath and urn making space and workshops.

We have a small number of these bags if anyone is interested, otherwise, come make a wreath and sip it hot and spiced (spiking optional).
