Farm Happenings for September 30, 2023

Posted on September 25th, 2023 by Emily Hendrikx

Another absolutely beautiful looking week.  Good weather to cure squash, ripen the last lingering fruit and roots and clean up.  The rainy weather this year, with our sandy soil, has been amazing.  Irrigating is never as good as rain, and the rain saves us a ton of time.  With that steady summer rain has come a big glut of carrots.  We go through a lot of carrots at our place, especially in the winter, when we try to stick to Ontario produce, meaning a lot of carrots, apples, cabbage and potatoes.

Though it sounds boring, we are so lucky that within a few hundred km are some of the most productive orchards, muck fields and soil anyone could hope for.  Its also another reason to enjoy eating in season and enjoying the different parts of the summer, peach season, strawberries, raspberries, etc.  Though growers and producers have developed many amazing varieties that stretch the season, summer is still fairly short in Ontario and we have to enjoy those fresh, beautiful fruits while we can.

We really appreciate your commitment to eating local, and eating in season.  It isn't always fun having to wait 10 months of the year for truly fresh strawberries, and we have been known to grab some berries out of season and country.  But I hope you have enjoyed the ups and downs of different veggies.  The zucchini and bean peaks and wanes, the ebbs and flows of cool season veg to heat lovers and back again, following the season and the veggies.  We cant thank you enough.
