Farm Happenings for August 24, 2023

Posted on August 21st, 2023 by Emily Hendrikx

Hey there,

That 'fall feeling' weather has started, the cooler nights and shorter days compel me to spend more time in the kitchen, wanting to put things up and away before the season is over.  But it isnt quite that season yet, so no hiding away in the house while there are jobs to do outside.  We are still planting, transplanting, and weeding away.  If you are not too tired of your own garden yet, quick fall plants are still good to plant.  Lots of different greens, radish, bok choi, baby kales, etc.  Many of these are quite hardy as well and can be picked after many of the tender plants have blackened from frost.

Another thing we have been busy doing is hatching chicks.  Our lovely friends over at Manic Pixie Dream Coffee leant us their incubator to see if we could hatch out a few lovely birds ourselves.  We hatched out 8 little guys all a weird mottled mix of blacks, yellows and red, I'm pretty excited to see how they turn out.  Not only that, we have 2 hens sitting on eggs in the barn as well.  We have had a lot of broody birds this summer, and I always feel a little guilty pulling them off the eggs and taking them away.  A broody bird has a specific fluffy stance over the eggs, which makes them look especially huffy when you put them on the ground.  So we tried to separate a few birds and let them sit.  We have tried in the past with varying degrees of success, but I have a good feeling this time.

But also, in appreciation to our coffee roasting friends for the incubator, we are offering their coffee as an extra in the shares if you would like to give them a try.
