Farm Happenings for October 7, 2021

Posted on October 4th, 2021 by Emily Hendrikx

The second to last pick up of the season.

We have had a light frost and are working on sorting and cracking garlic for the last big planting of the season.  Hopefully we will have around 3000 again, but more would be lovely.  Once it dries up a bit, we hope to be out mowing old crops, spreading manure, prepping beds for garlic and for early planting in the spring.  We also planted a bunch of dry beans that we are excited to crack open, we have dutch brown, soldier, Jacobs cattle, black turtle, and a few others.  These unique and colourful beans are waiting patiently in the field, dying back slowly and dying up. We will then pull them, lay them on a tarp to dry up a little more and then smash the heck out of them to knock the beans out of the dried up pods.  We an then separate them from the stems and plant trash, put them in bags/jars so they are ready to use in the cold winter months in soups, chilis, salads and bakes.
