Farm Happenings for September 21, 2020

Posted on September 18th, 2020 by Joan Norman

Welcome to fall weather! The cooler nights and dry air are a welcome change after a hot and muggy summer. We are in one of the biggest transition weeks on the farm as the summer crops begin to fade with the cold nights and we see the return of some of our fall favorites. This is always my favorite time to eat on the farm since we have such a wide variety of veggies available. New to the availability list this week include potatoes, sweet potatoes, and acorn squash. We will also be tapering out the last of the tomato fields, so you may notice some limited availability in tomato varieties over the next week or two.

We have also been amazed and saddened to see how much haze is in the air this week from the wildfires in the western US. I was driving down I-83 in Timonium yesterday and noticed that the sky was almost as hazy as it was during a typical fire season when I used to live in Utah, some 2,000 miles closer to the fires. Environmental catastrophes like these reinforce our commitment to creating a sustainable and local food system. We truly believe that farming on our scale allows us to make responsible farming choices that reduce our environmental impact will still maintaining a healthy family business. Making thoughtful, informed decisions about our consumption is one of the most powerful tools that we wield as consumers (along with voting!). We thank you for your continued support and encourage you to take a moment to consider how you can apply your love for local produce to other areas of your life.
