Farm Happenings for November 19, 2019

Posted on November 16th, 2019 by Lisa Duff

This week on the farm we've had roller coaster temperatures. Last weekend we saw 2 nights back to back with 20F. Yesterday was 53F during the day and back to a freezing 27F at night. We open the high tunnels during the day, uncover the field crops we're trying to save and cover everything back up in the late afternoon.  Luckily we have high tunnels to extend the season. High tunnels are helpful to get a jump start in the spring for tender crops, extend the life of crops in the Fall (like cherry tomatoes and sweet peppers) and grow hardy greens like lettuce, kale and spinach through the winter.

The salad mix this week comes from a planting in the high tunnel over a month ago. It's beautiful baby tender lettuces. The hakurei turnips this week come from the high tunnel as well. They are small with gorgeous greens. Use the greens for braising or a sauté. We harvested all the rest of the Napa cabbage this week. It will store for a long time in your vegetable crisper. It's wonderful in vegetable soup, a sautés with sesame oil and soy sauce or used raw in salads like, my favorite, Chinese Chicken Salad.

One week left after this week. We hope you've enjoyed your local, organic produce. Be on the look out for auto renew options and our Refer a Friend program for CSA 2020. IF you love Oak Spring Farm Certified Organic CSA refer a friend and get MORE produce for free!

Thank you for your continued support. We love to grow for you!
