Farm Happenings for September 3, 2019

Posted on August 30th, 2019 by Lisa Duff

Welcome to CSA week 16 out of 22! We're moving into fall slowly but surely...

This picture is of the Green Tomato Hornworm. They bite and eat tomatoes and tomato plants. They have been inhabiting our tomato plants in the tunnels! We don't mind sharing some but these worm have grown FAT and a little too happy. Anyways there are still plenty of big red tomatoes. The cherry tomatoes have slowed down some. We hope to keep them going for some more weeks, fingers crossed.

Believe it or not fruit share is almost over. You will see Sugar Baby watermelons and Shaw apples again this week.

The peppers, both hot and sweet, are coming in strong. The hot pepper varieties include Cayenne (long, slender, red), padrons, cherry hots (round red), shishito (not so hot but every once in a while one is!), fish peppers and jalapeños.

Tomatoes and peppers are the basis for a good homemade Chili SOOOO.....

Mark your calendars we have a date for our Harvest Party!

Saturday, October 19th 4pm-9pm.

Bring your best pot of chili( or Fall favorite), your favorite local beverage (adult or not), your family, a chair, an instrument or just yourself! Mingle with like minded CSA members, meet the farmers, take a farm tour and enjoy an afternoon of amazing food and relaxation on the farm.

The ever energetic resident farm kids (Sammi (16), Henry (13) & Izzi(10)) will happily keep an eye on your babies, toddlers, & elementary school kiddos with some games and the swing set.

Whiskey Feathers, a fantastic local bluegrass-y band will be playing and we'll have a jam session for anyone who wants to play. We may even try for a family yoga class at 3:30pm if folks are interested...

A Farm tour by Lisa will happen at 4pm.

We like to say we have a Chili Cook off. It's a bit more casual but we like to know what's in it (write a recipe/ingredient card), the spice level and where the ingredients are from!  This is for LOCAL food, ya'll can appreciate that. If making or eating chili isn't your bag how about cornbread, salad, apple pie or cheese and crackers?

OK! Can't wait, it's always a good time. Do let Lisa know if you and the family can make it.

Cheers!

Lisa
