Farm Happenings for August 4, 2020

Posted on July 31st, 2020 by Lisa Duff

Here's a great picture of a 100% CSA breakfast from a faithful and delightful CSA member. Thanks Paige & Noam for sharing your breakfast with us.

The long, stifling heat wave seems to be breaking today.  It stayed in the eighties with a deluge of rain just now. Thank you Mother Nature, just when we can barely take one more day of super hot sun beating down on us and our small, vulnerable fall transplants....

Many of these transplants, despite being watered amply, struggle to survive. The pest pressure from Cabbage loopers, Army worms, Harlequin beetles and grasshoppers poses as big a threat as the 95 F heat on transplanting days....Not to mention downey mildew, powdery mildew and countless other fungus who love warm, moist weather. Ah the Chesapeake region!

We feel good to harvest the bounty we do. This region is incredibly challenging to grow in organically and we're growing!

This week tomato, eggplant & peppers take the stage!  Sweet banana, no heat Shishito (Shiso), sweet purple Islander, sweet Cupid snacking peppers, Italian roasting peppers, and hot jalapeños!

Heirloom tomatoes are coming in from the fields, like German Johnsons, Berkeley Tye Dye, Striped German, Cherokee Purple, Valencia, Cherokee Green, Green Zebra just to name a few.  They don't always look perfect but they have a righteous flavor. We will pack them gingerly in your bags..

The squash bugs and mildews have taken down this planting of summer squash. We have new beds coming in protected by row cover so look for September summer squash! Also leeks and spaghetti squash are on the horizon. We're working to get some salad greens back in your shares too!

Cantaloupe for fruit share

Bread share will be roasted garlic asiago this week.

Simple Country and Cinnamon raisin bread will be EXTRAS.

Cheese and Butter share will get butter along with cheese this week!

Remember you can change your pick up location and reschedule your share to help work around those vacation plans. Double up your share before visiting relatives or renting a beach house. Take that fresh, organic produce with you!  Or double up when you get home and prepare an extra meal or two for the freezer.

As always we are grateful to grow for you and be your farmers. We appreciate your support in all the ways you give it.  Please consider writing us a review on Facebook or sharing one of our posts (or make your own post on our page!) on Facebook or Instagram.

Enjoy the rain and cooler temps,
