Farm Happenings for June 9, 2020

Posted on June 5th, 2020 by Lisa Duff

Happy Second Main Season CSA!

We will have broccoli this week, both heads and mini bunches, kohlrabi, hakurei turnips, Easter egg and French breakfast radishes, romaine lettuce, red butterhead lettuce and salad mix, kale, chard and more!

Harvie always gives storage tips and recipe ideas with your selection. Using websites like 'All Recipes.com' are great too. You can put in what you have and you'll get back out recipe ideas.

So much going on at the farm. The mini drought here was ended last night with 1/2" of very welcomed rain. We are so in need of water that we're drilling a new well. County approved it this week. We have plans in the works to put up a (mostly) proper greenhouse and get our big old bank barn restored so it doesn't cave in on itself!

We're battling cucumber beetles right now; they came out of seemingly nowhere to overtake every last uncovered cucumber, melon and squash plant. They eat the plants but worst of all they carry a disease called Bacterial Wilt. There is no cure or prevention for it and it means a short life for plants they infect. Pests are in long supply here this season. We've seen them coming out earlier and hungrier than in years past. We work hard to keep the pests at bay with timing, barrier methods like row cover, and even organically certified spray when absolutely necessary but this may be a year you'll see more pest damaged leaves and perhaps a pest or two will make it into your bag. We will apologize now.

The good news is we are growing a great variety of food and we are SO excited to share it with you all season long.

Give us a shout on social media with a picture of your yummy Oak Spring farm meals or your kids enjoying some fresh veg. We love to hear from you.

Please remember to return your bags and leave your labels on every week!

Reach out if you need us.

Bon Appetit!
