Fall Farm Share Week 2: Snow?!

Posted on November 6th, 2023 by Kim Barker

Welcome to Week 2 of the Fall Farm Share!

It's time to customize your share! You have til Tuesday at midnight to do so. Don't forget to return your green bag!

That was an interesting brush with winter last week! You might be wondering how our vegetables fared, and the answer is: just fine! The vegetables that were still out in the field are cold-hardy and everything survived. That includes kohlrabi, turnip, winter radish, summer radish, fennel, turnip, beets, carrots, leeks, bok choi, and even salad mix!

On The Farm

Last week Alex spent time making organizing all our storage vegetables and keeping them cozy inside our walk-in cooler by adding a heater.

This week, our focus will be on removing all the storage vegetables that are left in the field. Even though they can withstand frost and even snow, they won't be growing anymore, and it's harder to harvest them when the ground is frozen! We'll harvest all our beets, carrots, turnips, winter radish, kohlrabi, and cabbage. These can be stored for long periods of time and maintain their freshness and quality.

 Veggie Highlights

We have two varieties of radish today, our purple summer radish and our red-and-white watermelon radish. Why not try them both and compare? (Remember, the watermelon radish should be peeled; the thick skin is what makes it a good storage crop)

We have our first harvest of spinach, but only 10 bags so I put it on as an optional item for swapping only. It's still growing in our hoophouse so we expect to have a bigger harvest soon!

I'm really into roasted fennel these days. Give this recipe a try:

Roasted Fennel with Delicata Squash and Apples

We hope you enjoy your veggies!
