Farm Share 2023 Week 11: Abundance Continues

Posted on August 14th, 2023 by Kim Barker

Welcome to Week 11 of the Farm Share!

It's time to customize your share! You have til Tuesday at midnight to do so. Don't forget to return your green bag!

I highly recommend you log on and customize your share because have a LOT of variety available and many items that are not automatically going in boxes, like herbs, hot peppers, fresh apples from our own farm tree, green peppers, okra, mini head lettuce, spring onions. We also have MELONS new this week, and carrots and potatoes from Common Ground Farm! There are extras of almost everything this week! The abundance continues. Thanks for sharing it with us!

On The Farm

We were so grateful to have had a week off from the farm. We couldn't do it without such a great team.

Back on the farm, we are refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of August!

Our first plantings of zucchini and cucumber are done for the season. They always succumb this time of year, which is why we plant two successions. Fortunately, our second succession is ready now!

We got our fall beets planted, which is a huge weight off our shoulders! We still have about 10 spots in our Fall Share which runs for 6 weeks from November - December.

We harvested our onions this week! This is always a marker for us of the waning of the summer season. We love growing onions and are happy to announce that after two seasons of a mediocre harvest, we finally have a good yield this season! Planting them in landscape fabric helped us a lot because they were planted in a field with a huge weed-seed bank.

Veggie Highlights

This week is juicy, folks.

We harvested the first round of our WATERMELONS! These are one of our favourite to grow, because they're like a vegetable that is actually a fruit!

We also have beans, tomatoes, sweet peppers, green peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, hot peppers, eggplant, herbs, lettuce, salad mix, spring onions, red and yellow onions, okra, apples, garlic...

This week we are adding CARROTS and POTATOES from Common Ground Farm, a local certified organic farm in St Thomas. Last year, we decided to stop growing potatoes since they are challenging to do profitably on our small scale.  And carrots... well, we're still having trouble growing these consistently (mostly weed issues) and we know how much people love this vegetable! So, buying in some items from another local farm seems like a win-win situation for everyone!

We hope you enjoy your veggies! Please don't hesitate to email at mulberrymoonfarm@gmail.com or text me at 519-719-7253 with any feedback or questions at any time. :)

Your farmer,

Kim
